Dante Alighieri (Florence, c. May 29, 1265 - Ravenna, 14 September 1321) was an Italian poet. His masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, has become the basis of modern thought and ends with the statement of the medieval way of understanding the world. Dante is accompanied in the hell that is in purgatory by his master Virgil in paradise by Beatrice and St. Bernard .
