La Comedia - original title - is the masterpiece of the Florentine poet and is considered the most important literary witness of medieval civilization and one of the greatest works of world literature. It is called "comedy" as written in the style of "comic" that is not dignified. Another interpretation is based on the fact that the poem begins with situations full of pain and fear, and ends with the peace and sublimity of Dante's vision of God began to work around the work 1300 (Jubilee year , so much that he paid to April 7 of that year his journey in the dark wood) and continued in the rest of his life, publishing poems as supplements. We have news of manuscript copies of 'Inferno around 1313, while the Purgatory was published in the next two years. The Paradiso, perhaps started in 1316 , was released as they completed the songs in the last years of the poet.
The poem is divided into three books or poems, each consisting of 33 songs (except Hell which has 34, since the former serves as a preface entire poem), and each song is composed of triplets of heroic verse. The comedy tends to be a broad and dramatic representation of reality, far from pedantic teaching medieval poetry, but imbued with a Christian spirituality that mixes with the new political passion of the poet and literary interests. It tells of an imaginary journey in the three kingdoms of the afterlife, in which cast good and evil of this world, made by the poet himself as a "symbol" of humanity, under the guidance of reason and faith . The arduous and tortuous path of Dante, whose language is becoming increasingly complex as he goes up to heaven, is, in the metaphor, even the difficult process of maturation of the illustrious vernacular language, which is emancipated from the narrow confines within which it had confined to the medieval scholastic injury. Dante is accompanied in the hell that is in purgatory by his master Virgil in paradise by Beatrice and St. Bernard .
